Possible explanations include: 1) Inoculating the baby with mother’s intestinal flora at birth is known to be protective; 2) Bath water dilutes GBS acquired during the descent among a multitude of competitive intestinal bacteria; 3) EOGBS is prevented by lower level of interventions and baby being held immediately by the mother at water birth both of which promote maternal/fetal immune function.
