Translational Research Institute

Brief Biography:

My knowledge and experience in biomedical/biological sciences has been extensive and broad. I have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry. I obtained my doctoral degree in biochemistry and have embarked on a career in medical research and teaching. I have scientific knowledge and expertise in a broad range of fields in cancer biology.

During my doctoral studies I studied the mechanisms of interactions of dietary mutagens/carcinogens with deoxyribonucleic acid. I did my first postdoctoral training atOhioStateUniversityatColumbus,Ohio,USAin the field of DNA repair with various aspects of analyzing genotoxin induced DNA damage in human cells. For my second postdoctoral training, I joined the Loyola University of Chicago where my research has been focused on the projects related to Mechanisms of Interferon mediated cell growth inhibition of hematological malignant cells. We identified a number of novel signaling pathways in the field of interferon research. I moved toUniversityofIllinoisatChicagoas Research Faculty, and continue working the field of interferon and awarded funding from American Cancer Society. The data obtained has been published in prestigious journals, Journal of Biochemical Chemistry, Journal of Immunology and Blood.

In August 2003, I joinedKingFaisalSpecialistHospitaland Research Centre as Scientist. At that time, I have 4 years of graduate experience fromIndiaand 14 years of Medical Research experience fromUSA. My main aim here at KFSHR&RC was to investigate the role of various growth signaling pathways in the etiology of hematological malignancies. The idea behind was to identify the target that helps cancer cells to proliferate and escape the normal apoptotic pathways. This will further help in targeting these pathways to inhibit the growth of malignant cells and induce apoptosis. This will help to develop more effective anticancer drugs.

In a short period of time we have identified a number of growth signaling pathways including PI3-kinase, AKT, Foxo transcription factor, GSk3 and Jak/Stat pathways in hematological malignancies. These studies have been published in a number of high Impact Factor (IF) journals including Oncogene (IF 6.3), Clinical Cancer Research (IF 6.5), Apoptosis (IF 4.8) and BBRC (IF 2.8). We have also published 12 abstracts in international conferences. Based on these successes from King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center, my name has been nominated in various scientific organizations. These include Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare (chosen as a candidate for inclusion in the 2006-2007 Edition), Academic Journal Inc. (Member of Editorial Board). I have been selected as a member of Basic Research Committee and Scientific Member of Cancer 2006 Meeting by the administration. I have also been invited to review a number of manuscripts on the basis of my achievement at KFSHR&RC.

These are my achievements to merit me for being promoted to next academic level. With given promotion, I will have more opportunity to expand our translational research program to investigate the pathogenesis of various types cancer using a variety of cancers fromSaudi Arabiapatients including Thyroid, Ovary,Colon, etc. We will identify gene profiles using state of the art techniques RNA and DNA microarrays by Affymetrix technology. These data will be further validated by quantitative PCR and microarrays. These studies will be critical in identifying gene or sets of genes responsible for the tumorigenesis of each cancer. The identification of such gene will be helpful for prognostic markers and for targeting them for the designing more effective anti-cancer drugs. The finding of these studies will have clinical applications. We will also promote more international collaborations to achieve our goals and objectives. My new position will also give me opportunities to promote and coordinates clinical and basic science research activities. We will assign priorities and allocates departmental resources to develop and implements effective strategies to provide an environment that enhances the growth, collaboration, achievement and recognition of KFSH&RC at national and international level.
