Researcher
Fundación Instituto de Estudios Avanzados

Brief Biography:

Raul Isea is currently an associate researcher at the Fundación Instituto de Estudios Avanzados IDEA in Caracas-Venezuela. He got the Ph.D in Chemistry (Universidad Complutense de Madrid–Spain) in 1996 and the B.S. in Physics (Universidad Central de Venezuela, Caracas-Venezuela) in 1993. He was a postdoctoral fellow research at the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas in Caracas from 1997 until 1999. In 2000, he got a postdoctoral position at the Rice University in Texas–USA. His research interest is focused on computational biological. Selected for “Who's Who in Science and Engineering” (2011-2012).

Academic positions:

From January 2001 to July 2007 was at Centro de Cálculo Científico  – Universidad de Los Andes (Mérida) in the Bionformatics Department. He worked in the advising to the Academic Community about the computational techniques that could be used in Science and Engineering areas. At the same time, he also worked in the development of distributed computational methods such as Grid among international Centres with the implementation of Bioinformatic tools in transnational projects.  From 1997 to 1999 he held a postdoctorate fellowship in the Centro de Química del Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas in the Department of Molecular Spectroscopy working on the modelling of Micelles of Asphaltenes and Resins of Different Types of Crude Oils as well as on the analysis of monocrystals by means of X-rays techniques

Research interests:

His main interest lays on Bioinformatics with a special emphasis on the computational design of future medicines to be used in the public Health System

Any other information:

In 1999 he got the annual national award from the Venezuelan Chamber of Beer Producers (CAVEFACE, ProSalud Program) for funding the research project “Computational modelling and futures developments in new drugs against malaria” the interest of which is the 3D reconstruction of protein structures to be used as drugs against Plasmodium falciparum.  From that Project, two scientific doubled peer-reviewed publications were published. Status of the Project: Ended.

From 2003 to 2007, he was one of the four coordinators of the Iberoamerican Bioinformatics Network which is funded by the Iberoamerican Programme for the development of Science and Technology for Development (“Programa Iberoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnología para el Desarrollo, CYTED”). Status of the Project: Ended.

From 2005 to 2007 he worked in the European Commission funded Project “EELA” in the development of concrete Bioinformatic tools to be used in the Public Health System. To the date, five scientific doubled peerreviewed publications  were published. Status of the Project: Ended.

From 2007 to the date, he is the person in charge of the Project “Creation of a Bioinformatic and Technological platform for the design of new medicines and encapsulated drugs”, the fund of which comes from the Venezuelan Cooperation framework. The aim of this project is the computational implementation of in-silico medicines design. Status of the Project: Ended.

From April 2008 to 2010 he is enrolled in the European Commission funded Project EELA-2 as third party of the Spanish Institution CIEMAT working in Phylogenetic studies and their development into Grid workflows.  Status of the Project: Ended.

From April 2008 to 2011 he is participate in the project the Iberoamerican and South American Bioinformatics Network enrolled in the CNPq (Brazil).  Status of the Project: Running.

From April 2009 to 2012 he is enrolled in the   Ibero American Network of Nano-Bio-Info-Cogno Convergent Technologies  (Ibero-NBIC) working in Workflow.   Status of the Project: Running.
