Any other information:

The histopathology department of SIUT was established by me in 1995. Since then, it has grown by leaps and bounds to its current status of one of the most modern and well equipped departments of the country. It has all the necessary diagnostic modalities to accurately diagnose the diseases and is equipped with state of the art instruments with automated tissue processors and embedding equipment. Frozen section facility for urgent diagnosis and sectioning for immunoflourescence test on renal and graft biopsies and transmission electron microscope for complete workup of native renal biopsy material are available. It is worth mentioning here that SIUT is the only center in Pakistan where diagnostic EM is regularly done on both native renal and renal allograft biopsy material. In the beginning, the main diagnostic areas involved renal and transplant pathology and urologic pathology. Later on, with the establishment of separate departments of hepatogastroenterology and oncology, the repertoire of diagnostic tests expanded and their volume increased markedly. The workload has steadily grown over the years and now almost parallels the work in some of the major tertiary care hospital departments in the city. The department processed over 7800 specimens, 800 cytologies and 1000 renal graft biopsies during last year (2010), the graft biopsies representing the largest number in a year in the world. It is of note that the renal graft biopsies are reported the same day by urgent tissue processing and staining, all done in 4 hours time. Over 18 thousand routine, special and immuno-stains were performed on the biopsy material and 300 specimens were processed for EM in the year 2010. In collaboration with College of Physician and Surgeons of Pakistan, the department is now fully recognised for fellowship training in histopathology. The first FCPS trainee of the department, was inducted in 1999 and he cleared his FCPS in histopathology in 2003, winning three gold medals. The department has also trained residents from CPSP, some of which are now serving as consultants in Pakistan and abroad. The department also holds regular clinico-pathological meetings with gastroenterology, adult and pediatric nephrology departments. It has the largest collection of museum specimens related to urology, gastroenterology and adrenal pathology.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

It is a novel and interesting concept in biomedial publishing. It will encourage the authors to present their work to the whole world for critical review and will ensure high standards in writing and publishing. I fully endorse this concept in scientific publishing.
