Dr. Jean Christopher Chamcheu

Brief Biography:

Jean Christopher Chamcheu, PhD is an Assistant Scientist in the Department of Dermatology, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Medicine and Public Health. He first earned his BS in Biochemistry (2000) from the Faculty of Science at the University of Dschang, Cameroon. He then moved to Sweden where he completed his MS in Biomedicine (2004) at the Health Science Faculty of Linköping University, followed by a PhD in Dermatology & Venereology (2010) at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Uppsala University. After graduation, Dr. Chamcheu immediately joined the Department of Dermatology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, working under the direction of Dr. Hasan Mukhtar where he completed over three and a half years of post-doctoral training. In 2014, he was promoted to his current rank of Assistant Scientist, a position equivalent to Research Assistant Professor at many Universities in the U.S. Over the past ten years, Dr. Chamcheu has devoted his research efforts to identify and understand the genetic and molecular basis of skin diseases and to develop novel mechanism-based small molecular weight natural and dietary agents for prevention and treatment of hereditary, stress-induced and inflammatory skin diseases and skin cancer. Early in his career, Jean Christopher employed gene sequencing, two dimensional (2D) keratinocyte and other skin cell cultures, culminating in the adaptation of a three-dimensional reconstituted human skin equivalent (3D RHSE) model that more closely mimics human skin. The 3D RHSE system was used to demonstrate the protective effect of chemical chaperones against stress-induced mutant keratin-aggregation phenotype in two keratin related genetic skin diseases or genodermatoses (Epidermolysis bullosa and Epidermolytic Ichthyoses). He later extended this work to another inflammatory skin model, psoriasis, and also to a melanoma skin cancer and other cancer models. Currently, Jean Christopher is devoting a large portion of his program amongst others to uncover the molecular targets and signaling pathways of cutaneous hyperplasia and inflammation in psoriasis and other inflammatory and keratinizing cutaneous diseases. His studies are also aimed at establishing novel predictive biomarker responses; targeting these pathways effectively using natural small molecule inhibitors for drug development. The ultimate goal of these studies is to identify novel prognostic markers and therapeutic targets for treating psoriasis and possibly other inflammatory and hyperproliferative disorders.
