Brief Biography:


Dr Sonal Asthana is a Senior consultant and Head of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Multi-organ Transplantation at BGS Global Hospitals, Bangalore. He completed his undergraduate medical training and postgraduate surgical degree from JIPMER, Pondicherry. He went on to obtain subspecialty training in Surgical Oncology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. In 2003, he joined the Liver Unit at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, UK, where he spent four years training in Hepatobiliary Surgery and Multi-organ transplantation, as well as on a higher surgical (Sub specialty) training rotation. He was then selected for the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) accredited fellowship in Multi-organ transplantation in Edmonton, Canada. He has had comprehensive training in, and exposure to all aspects of complex liver biliary and pancreatic surgery as well as training in liver, kidney, whole-organ pancreas, small bowel and clinical islet-cell cell transplantation. Dr Sonal Asthana has an extensive research background with more than 40 publications and scientific articles, numerous abstracts and presentations at national and international meetings to his credit. He is a recipient of awards from the British Transplant Society, The American Society of Transplantation, The Canadian Transplant Society and has been a recipient of the Alberta Heritage fellowship (AHFMR) and the American Association of the Society of Liver disease (AASLD) HPB surgery and Liver Transplantation award. He also has a postgraduate research degree from the University of Alberta. He was also selected for the European Health Leadership program at INSEAD, France in 2010. Dr Asthana is an expert in the surgical management of liver, gall bladder, biliary and pancreatic diseases and cancers as well as liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation. He has expertise in clinical islet cell transplantation. His research interests include the management of Hepatitis C, post-transplant immunosuppression, transplant epidemiology and hepatocellular carcinoma.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:


Webmed central is a novel idea, which addresses several of the perceived lacunae of a blinded, peer-review system. A rapid turnaround time, and identification of reviewers will increase the transparency of the review process.
