Brief Biography:


Somprakas Basu is Associate Professor of General Surgery at the Institute of Medical Sciences of Banaras Hindu University India. He graduated from Kolkata University India in 1990 and was awarded the order of merit for first position in Surgery in the University. He completed post-graduation in Surgery (MS) in 1998 from Delhi University India. After completion of surgical residency, registrarship and clinical tutorship in Surgery he became a consultant and Assistant Professor in Surgery in 2002. During his academic career he received numerous awards, medals and prizes including the Order of Merit (Gold medal) of Calcutta University and the best junior resident award during his residency at Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi. In his professional career, he has received numerous research paper awards, traveling fellowships, honors including the prestigious International Guest Scholar of the American College of Surgeons in 2011. He had been a visiting clinical fellow in colorectal surgery at Christian Medical College, Vellore, India and Weill Cornell Medical College and New York Presbyterian hospital, USA. He has also delivered guest lectures at various meetings and conferences in India. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine UK, International College of Surgeons USA and Association of Surgeons of India, and is an active member of Indian Medical Association, Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology, Association of Colorectal Surgeons of India, Association of the Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and Indian Society of Wound Management. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, UK, International College of Surgeons, USA and Association of Surgeons of India, and is an active member of Indian Medical Association, Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology, Association of Colorectal Surgeons of India, Association of the Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and Indian Society of Wound Management. He has published numerous articles in journals like Digestive surgery, Archives of Surgery, British Medical Journal, Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, International Journal of Surgery, Ostomy Wound Management, International Surgery etc., and has been member of editorial board and reviewer of a number of peer reviewed journals. His special interest is in abdominal surgery, colorectal surgery and wound healing research and academic interest is in medical education. His varied research interest lies in rectal cancers, experimental study of the effect of sepsis on colon and bacterial biofilms in chronic wounds. He lives in Varanasi, India with his wife (neonatologist) and his son. He loves to draw and paint and listen to music and songs in his leisure hours.
