Ms. Shinjini Mukherjee

Doctoral Fellow
Molecular Environmental Microbiology (MEM)
University of Helsinki

Brief Biography:

Shinjini completed her B.Sc. degree in Biotechnology from Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University (India) in 2007 and ranked 4th in the degree class. She then went onto complete her M.Sc. in Biotechnology from Nagpur University (India) in 2009 and ranked 3rd in the degree class. She was also awarded the 'Best Student Award' for the session 2007-08 during her M.Sc. degree. In the course of her M.Sc., Shinjini worked on tracking of genes important for atrazine degradation from a microcosm-derived metagenome at National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI, Nagpur, India). Following her M.Sc., Shinjini joined NEERI as a project fellow in an Indo-Finland project dealing with genomic tools in bioremediation against the pollutant - atrazine. Shinjini is currently working as a Doctoral Fellow/PhD student at the Molecular Environmental Microbiology (MEM) group under Prof. Kim Yrjälä towards her PhD degree at the highly prestigious, University of Helsinki. Her current research focuses on, rhizoremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soils which is estimated by fingerprinting the functional marker genes representing bacterial communities.
