Catholic University of Leuven
Herestraat 49, Box 901

Brief Biography:

Abhishek completed his BSc degree in Biotechnology from Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University (India) in 2007, as a class topper. He also completed a Diploma in Bioinformatics (D/L) from the Bioinformatics Institute of India in the same year. During this period he was also granted the ‘Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) 2006-07’ (by G. H. Raisoni Institute of Interdisciplinary Sciences, India) and the highly distinguished, ‘IASc-INSA-NAS Summer Research Fellowship (SuRF) 2007’ (jointly by Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences). During the URF 2006-07, Abhishek carried out research on various topics including – developmental biology (effects of hypergravity and pollution), amphibian toxicology and elephantidae phylogenetics. During the SuRF 2007, Abhishek worked on mutational screening of human retinoblastoma susceptibility gene, RB1 at the Kallam Anji Reddy Molecular Genetics Laboratory, L. V. Prasad Eye Institute (India). Abhishek then went onto complete his MSc degree in Biosciences with Human Genetics, as a Commonwealth Scholar, from the University of Leeds in the year 2008. His degree education at Leeds was fully-funded by the prestigious, ‘Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme 2007-08’ awarded to him jointly by the British Government (DFID and CSC, London) and Leeds University. During his MSc degree, Abhishek worked on anti-cancer regimes against oral cancer cells, based on the concept of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) using a novel second generation drug/compound at Dept. of Oral Biology in Leeds Dental Institute. He completed his MSc degree as a class topper for which he was awarded with the ‘Best Student Prize’ by Faculty of Biological Sciences, Leeds University. Abhishek is currently working as a Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Molecular Cell Biology under Prof Patrizia Agostinis towards his PhD degree at the highly prestigious, Catholic University of Leuven. His doctoral studies are fully-funded by the ‘Leuven International Doctoral School Biomedical Sciences PhD Fellowship 2008’. His current research focuses on inducing immunogenic cancer cell death (or immunogenic apoptosis) so as to improve the communication between dying cancer cells and the immune system, a phenomenon that could help in revival of anti-tumour immunity.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

I believe that if proper steps are taken and every piece of submitted paper is thouroughly checked as well as reviewed than this could be next best thing after Faculty of 1000 (F1000).
