Research interests:

Identification of cellular/molecular processes involved in the pathogenesis of trypanosomiasis; phytomedicine; metal-based nanoparticle therapeutics and biochemical toxicology: Previous research works focussed on developing phytomedicine with anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory properties. This involved rational screening of plant-derived compounds for both anti-trypanosomal and anti-inflammatory properties as well as evaluation for probable toxicities. The idea was to search for novel compounds with medicinal properties that could be developed into phytomedicine or rather become template for synthesis toward drug development against trypanosomiasis and other like infectious diseases. To take the fight against these tropical diseases further, my current research activity targets the development of metal-based nanoparticle as therapeutics and diagnostics for use in the control of infectious diseases. Biologically synthesised nanoparticles are being evaluated through their interaction with novel biomedical targets for anti-infective and/or anti-parasitic properties as well as diagnostic values. The toxicity profile and mechanisms of action of the nanoparticles are also to be pursued.
